Yao Ming Set to Retire

Yao Ming is ending his injury-plagued NBA career. The 7' 6" player from China showed great ability and fan recognition but was ultimately unable to overcome repeated injuries to his feet. The decision is not a huge surprise but Ming was expected to at least attempt to play another season. Several teams were reportedly interested in his services. An official announcement from Ming is expected soon.

The 30-year-old center from Shanghai started his professional career with the Shanghai Sharks in the Chinese Basketball Association, joining the senior team at the age of 17. He would go on to be selected by the Houston Rockets with the first pick in the 2002 NBA Draft.

Ming spent nine seasons with the Rockets, averaging 19 points and over nine rebounds per game. He was one of the biggest international stars in the league and helped bring the NBA notoriety overseas, particularly in Asia. He was an eight-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA team five times.

Interest from China always kept him hobby relevant even though he had trouble staying on the court. Ming only played two full seasons during his time in the NBA. Injuries derailed the great potential he had and kept him out of 252 games throughout his career.  He missed the entire 2009-10 season and only played five games last season.
