Given how synonymous Michael Jordan has become with the sneaker world thanks to his Air Jordan line, it is hard to imagine him wearing anything else. However, a rare offering from the Grey Flannel Summer Games Auction features a pair of signed Converse sneakers that were worn by Michael Jordan in the 1984 Olympics.
Featuring the last amateur United States basketball team to take home the gold medal, a 21-year-old Michael Jordan led a youth-filled 1984 Olympics team that also included Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin. The team, coached by Bobby Knight, went 8-0 in the global tournament, winning by an average of over 30 points per game.
Following the medal ceremony, 1984 Michael Jordan Olympics game-worn shoes were reportedly gifted to both of the team's ballboys. While the specific games of usage are unknown, both pairs were worn by Jordan in the Olympic games. The pair in question has been maintained by the same owner since that day.
Although the bidding for the shoes starts at $50,000, Richard Russek, President of Grey Flannel Auctions, believes the historic sneakers, along with several other key items, each have "the potential of reaching $100,000." Earlier this year, another pair of game-used Michael Jordan shoes that pre-dated the Jordan line were also sold at auction.
In addition to the 1984 Michael Jordan Olympic sneakers, several other notable game-used pieces are featured in the 2015 Summer Games Auction from Grey Flannel. The key options are noted below:
