With Panini having wrapped up its legal dealings with Leaf, it must have had some time to take care of other business. On October 18, it filed 18 trademark applications. In one day.
Compare that to Topps who filed nine and Upper Deck who filed 11 in all of 2013.
Prior to this, Panini had filed only one other trademark application in 2013 so it's equally likely someone in the legal department realized, "Holy crap! We really haven't filed anything this year. Hurry up! File everything! We need to justify our budget!"
Panini's trademark applications range from another run on metals with marks like GOLD STANDARD, GOLDEN AGE and GOLD RUSH and applications for a number of newer (and older) products and inserts such as INNOVATION, TOTALLY CERTIFIED, ELITE EXTRA EDITION, CLEAR VISION, FLAWLESS, PANINI SIGNATURES, COURT KINGS, INTRIGUE, PAST & PRESENT, PEN PALS, ACES, STATUS, ASPIRATIONS, GRIDIRON and CRUSADE.
I don't see too much controversy in these applications, but I find it amusing that the "TOTALLY CERTIFIED" application might start a run on filing other "TOTALLY" unnecessary applications. Can you imagine TOTALLY CHROME? TOTALLY ELITE EXTRA EDITION? TOTALLY FLAWLESS? And hey, since everyone is big into throwback products, why not an 1980s retro entertainment product called TOTALLY AWESOME?
