Alex Galchenyuk Rookie Card Guide and Prospect Card Highlights

Rookie Cards

The Montreal Canadiens are emerging as legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. Bolstered by a roster of several explosive young players including Alex Galchenyuk. The third pick in the 2012 draft, it didn't take long for the center to make the transition from minor hockey to the NHL. He debuted with the Canadiens as an 18-year-old in the shortened 2012-13 season, racking up 27 points in 48 games.

The first NHL cards for Galchenyuk and other players who debuted in 2012-13 were held back to 2013-14. This means that there will be plenty of Alex Galchenyuk rookie cards as Panini and Upper Deck will include him in their sets throughout the season.

Collectors can also find a handful of Alex Galchenyuk cards that were released prior to his official NHL rookie cards. In the Game included him in products as early as 2011-12 when he was a member of the Sarnia Sting. These include autographs. Upper Deck included rookie redemptions in a couple of their 2012-13 products, which Galchenyuk ended up being a part of. These inserts didn't release until 2013-14 NHL products came out.

Below is a detailed look at the various Alex Galchenyuk rookie cards available to collectors. We've also added select highlights of his key prospect and pre-rookie cards.

2013-14 Fleer Showcase Alex Galchenyuk RC #200 Autographed Patch #/175

This is definitely one of the more high-end Galchenyuk rookies. Anytime you combine a patch and an autograph (even a sticker), prices are going to be higher. The print run is low, but not as much as a handful of his other cards.

2013-14 O-Pee-Chee Alex Galchenyuk RC #575

There's a lot of history behind the O-Pee-Chee brand. However Upper Deck's take on it has not meant big price tags for singles. Although the Marquee Rookies card is a short print, it's still fairly easy to track down. The low price tag of the product translates into reasonable prices for this card on the secondary market.

2013-14 Panini Contenders Alex Galchenyuk RC #265 Autograph

Contenders rookies have a lot going for them but on-card signatures are the lead attraction. The Rookie Ticket theme has a rich tradition in football but not so much with hockey. As a result, prices might not be as high as a comparable gridiron star. Besides the base version, the card has a pair of variations as well.

2013-14 Panini Crown Royale Alex Galchenyuk RC #134 Autographed Patch #/99

This is one of the most popular, and beautiful, Alex Galchenyuk rookies. Part of the Rookie Silhouettes subset gives it a lot of clout. The name carries over into several sports adding a further layer of recognition and appeal. Jersey swatches are a mix of premium cuts or patches, which give multi-color pieces.

2013-14 Panini Dominion Alex Galchenyuk RC #199 Autographed Patch #/199

Traditionally, autographed patch rookies come out at the end of the hockey card season. Panini switched it up with Dominion. The on-card signature, clean design and relatively limited print run make this one of the top Alex Galchenyuk rookie cards.

2013-14 Panini National Treasures Alex Galchenyuk RC #128 Autographed Patch #/99

This and The Cup are viewed by most as the top Alex Galchenyuk rookie cards. A large patch swatch, a hard-signed autograph and low numbering are the highlights. The top-notch design shouldn't be overlooked either. This includes a milky acetate stock that adds another dimension to the card.

Alex Galchenyuk Rookie Card Guide and Prospect Card Highlights 6

2013-14 Panini Playbook Alex Galchenyuk RC #132 Autographed Dual Jersey Book #/199

This card stands out simply because it's a book card. The added size leaves plenty of room for many premium elements. One side has a jersey swatch and the signature while a second swatch is layered underneath a die-cut player image on the other. The print run is reasonable at 199.

2013-14 Panini Prime Alex Galchenyuk RC #117 Autographed Quad Jersey #/199

In a short time, Prime became one of Panini's most popular brands. And while the rookies are solid, it's more the unique veteran relics that are the reason. While prices for this card are solid, they're not as high as you might think given the autographed quad jersey design.

2013-14 Panini Prizm Alex Galchenyuk RC #251

Making its debut as a standalone hockey product, 2013-14 Panini Prizm hit the market with a lot of buzz. The chromium design fills a void in the hockey market. And while not a high-end set, expect to pay a small premium over low-end releases. The card also has several Refractor-like Prizm parallels that are proving to be popular.

2013-14 Panini Rookie Anthology Alex Galchenyuk RC #160 Autographed Dual Jersey #/249

This card walks the line of being high-end and mid-range. As a result, it suffers somewhat. It has the autographed dual relic working for it, but the sticker is a big step back from comparable rookies. For those looking for something a little more affordable, this is a definite option.

Alex Galchenyuk Rookie Card Guide and Prospect Card Highlights 10

2013-14 Panini Titanium Alex Galchenyuk RC #192 #/27

There is one simple reason why this card garners plenty of attention when it surfaces: the print run. Numbered to his jersey number, the card is limited to just 27 total copies. Unfortunately the bland foil design doesn't match the appeal the miniscule print run brings.

2013-14 Panini Titanium Retail Alex Galchenyuk #192 #/299

Numbered to a much more reasonable 299, this card can only be found in retail tins. The set wasn't overly popular so it doesn't have a lot of buzz behind it. For collectors looking for something relatively rare, this fits.

2013-14 Panini Totally Certified Alex Galchenyuk RC #217

Totally Certified has lots of rookie autographs and jersey cards. However, rookie cards are just like the veteran base cards. This gives collectors a chance to pick up a very distinct card at very reasonable prices. Parallels added color and rarity for those looking for more.

2013-14 Score Alex Galchenyuk RC #645

Panini's entry-level set, 2013-14 Score Hockey is more about getting cards into as many hands as possible rather than providing limited availability. That said, it is a short print. That doesn't make it rare or extremely valuable, just tougher than veteran base cards.

2013-14 Select Alex Galchenyuk RC #298 Autograph #/399

The chromium design is nice. The autograph is too. But the sticker on chromium combination takes away some of the appeal. Select never fully caught on so this card does offer reasonably priced rookie autographs.

2013-14 SP Authentic Alex Galchenyuk RC #277 Autograph #/999

Where Contenders lacks much of the brand history in hockey, SP Authentic has it. Despite a much higher print run than other premium rookie it remains a popular option with a lot of collectors.

2013-14 SP Game Used Alex Galchenyuk RC #101 #/27

Like Titanium, this card is limited to Galchenyuk's jersey number. However, the cleaner design and brand history have made SPGU the more popular of the two. Print run is clearly the main factor behind the big prices this card gets.

2013-14 SPx Alex Galchenyuk RC #147

Talk about disappointments. For years, SPx has been about premium rookie cards. Not only is the plain foil far from what collectors might expect, but the white stripe running through the card takes away a lot of its visual appeal. Galchenyuk does have a dual-jersey autograph in the set as well.

2013-14 Upper Deck Alex Galchenyuk RC #203

Part of the iconic Young Guns subset, this is likely the most traded Alex Galchenyuk rookie cards. Upper Deck's flagship hockey set has tremendous appeal to a broad mix of collectors. As a result, prices are a little higher than one not familiar with the set might expect.

2013-14 Upper Deck Artifacts Alex Galchenyuk RC #152 #/999

Upper Deck Artifacts has always been more about the memorabilia than the rookie cards. That said, the 2013-14 Upper Deck Artifacts Alex Galchenyuk rookie card is limited to 999 and features a classy design. It's positioned as a mid-range option that carries a decent value but its available enough that prices shouldn't get too high.

2013-14 Upper Deck Black Diamond Alex Galchenyuk RC #237

Black Diamond is one of hockey's longest-running brands. Popular with set collectors as an early release, the card comes with a distinct etched-foil look. Part of the Quad Diamond subset, Galchenyuk is a short print. As a result, prices are fairly strong given its lack of premium elements.

2013-14 Upper Deck Ice Alex Galchenyuk RC #129 #/99

This card can be found in bonus packs randomly inserted in 2013-14 SPx boxes. The combination of the clear acetate card stock and rarity make it one of the more valuable Alex Galchenyuk rookie cards despite the lack of autograph or memorabilia.

2013-14 Upper Deck The Cup Alex Galchenyuk RC #188 Autographed Patch #/99

This ranks at or near the top of the list when it comes to most valuable Alex Galchenyuk rookie cards. Sure it has the autograph, patch and miniscule print run, but it also has a lot of brand affinity behind it as well. Upper Deck introduced The Cup when it had an NHL exclusive the first time, setting the bar for high-end releases and building a strong following since.

2013-14 Upper Deck Trilogy Alex Galchenyuk RC #107 Autograph #/699

Being the first autographed Alex Galchenyuk rookie card, this card carries some added significance. The release also has base set autographs numbered to 399 and 49. The use of stickers may turn off some collectors, but the numbering should ensure that this one is somewhat readily available over the long-term.

2013-14 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Alex Galchenyuk RC #177 Autograph #/99

This card is proving to be very popular. Coming from one of Upper Deck's most expensive sets of the year, the on-card autograph and 99 serial-numbered copies have resulted in strong secondary market prices.

2012-13 Upper Deck Trade Card Alex Galchenyuk #TC-3

The "Trade Upper Deck" card dates back to the company's early years. It has been brought back recently in several sports to deliver hot rookies that might not be available for a set's initial release. 2012-13 Upper Deck Hockey had three such cards. After the labor dispute cut the season short, these redemptions were delayed somewhat but the final Galchenyuk, which is the third redemption in the set, is now out.
