For the past several years, Topps has been including exclusive manufactured patch cards as an incentive in retail blaster boxes. 2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball is no different. Sticking with the pattern of the last couple seasons, there are two types of patches inserted. The first is a series of somewhat random patches, most of which come with logos. The second set reprints superstar rookie cards.
In total, there are 49 different blaster-exclusives, 25 Commemorative Patch Cards and 24 Rookie Patch Cards. It looks as though the plan was to have 25 Rookie Patches, but number 24 didn't make the cut for whatever reason.
Commemorative Patch Cards have a variety of different themes. Consisting entirely of superstars who played in 2013, embroidered patches include team logos, mascots and anniversaries. Derek Jeter has a 3,000 hit logo while his recently retired teammate, Mariano Rivera, has a retirement patch.
Like past years, Rookie Patch Cards cover the history of Topps. Similar to Silk parallels, they recreate an original Topps card. This year they have a black frame. Last year the borders were much more colorful.
Typically, these manufactured patch cards don't carry a ton of secondary market value over the long-term. However, because nearly all of them feature superstars and the designs are different from most everything else released in a given year, these can sell for more than many common game-used relics.
Besides the exclusive patch card, 2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball blaster boxes come with ten packs. Each pack has eight cards.
