2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variation Short Prints Guide
Overview
Who's ready for a postseason celebration? That's the first theme for the 2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball variation short prints. The majority of the SSPs show players in a postseason party or wearing themed gear.
Variations were not included on the set's checklist. Nor do packs make any mention of them. The stealth inserts have become a staple of the brand, offering alternate photos of the base cards.
Like previous years, the 2014 Topps Baseball variations aren't limited to players on the Series 1 checklist. For example, Adam Wainwright's SP card is number 375. 2014 Topps Series 1 ends at #331. Besides a couple of inserts, the Cardinals pitcher only appears on a League Leaders card. It's safe to say that Wainwright has a spot reserved on the Series 2 checklist that will come with a different picture.
The postseason theme isn't the only type of variation. Several players have Sparkle versions, a theme used in 2011 Topps Baseball. For example, a Mike Trout variant as an added sparkle on one of his cleats. Joe Mauer has a similar variation with a sparkle on his helmet. Basically, you need to look very closely to spot the difference. Sparkle variations are significantly tougher than the photo variations.
Below you'll find a list of confirmed 2014 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations and short prints. We've included images of both the SP version and, when applicable, the base version for comparison. There are also want list-friendly notes to help you tell the difference between the two.
