Oh my, there are a lot of 2014 Topps Football variation short prints. As in over 100 of them. But while that may seem a little daunting, there are some simple ways to spot a lot of them.

The variations lineup is split between veterans and rookies. While the first-year players require a close look to figure out, veterans are another story -- if you have the base set checklist in hand.

2014 Topps Football Veteran Variations have different numbering. So if you know a player's spot in the main set, you will know right away if you find them with a different number on the back. For example, Andrew Luck is #69 in the base set. His variation has a different photo on the front and is #38 on the back. Whether it's a variation of Luck's base card or the Kansas City Chiefs team card is up to you. It does sound a little confusing, but it doesn't take long to get a hang of.

The one exception is Julius Thomas. He's #9 in the base set and for the variations.

Another thing to watch here is players with multiple base cards. For example, Luke Kuechly has his regular card (with an All-Pro designation) that is #286. He also has an award winner subset card that's #272. None of the Veteran Variations go past #69.

Most Veteran Variations have a celebratory theme, which can be another tip-off. This isn't always the case but it is consistent.

Rookies take a more traditional approach. Select players are shown with a second photo but numbering remains the same. A lot of the differences are subtle so it takes a keen eye to spot them.

Another Way to Quickly Spot 2014 Topps Football Variations

There's one more quick way to spot variations. To do so, go to the fine print on the back of the card. At the end of the small legal stuff, there's a code. Look at the last two digits. If it ends with 22, it's a base card. Rookie Variations end in 50 and Veteran Variations have 51.
